Florida State’s Lacey Waldrop & Maddie O’Brien earn recognition
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State’s Maddie O’Brien has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week, while teammate Lacey Waldrop earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Waldrop came through for Florida State last week in the circle, as the Seminoles went 5-0 with wins at North Carolina, at No. 6 Florida and at home against Maryland. The Chester, Va., native started three games last week and pitched in relief of two others, finishing the week with a 4-0 record, a 1.54 ERA with 21 strikeouts on 22.2 innings pitched and one save. The junior was instrumental in Florida State’s eight-inning 3-2 win in Gainesville over UF on April 2 as she pitched a complete game, tied a career high with 8.0 innings pitched and scattered six hits, allowing only two runs and recording nine strikeouts. She also tossed a complete game victory at North Carolina on March 31, giving up only three hits, one unearned run and posting four strikeouts while retiring 19 of the final 22 batters she faced. Waldrop now has a record of 25-2 and an ERA of 0.70 on the season. Waldrop has earned conference weekly honors a record seven times this season.
O’Brien finished the week with four multi-hit games and batted .571 (8-for-14) with two doubles, three home runs, five walks, five RBI and six runs scored. Against the No. 6 Gators, O’Brien hit a solo home run in the fourth, made an outstanding defensive catch to save a run – and the game – in the seventh inning and drove in the winning RBI in the top of the eighth to give FSU its first win in Gainesville since 2003. With her three home runs, O’Brien now owns FSU records for single-season home runs (16) and RBI (63), as well as the career HR mark (34).
