Florida State’s Thomas, Duke's Parker earn weekly honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) -- Florida State's Aaron Thomas has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, while Duke's Jabari Parker has been honored as the ACC Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season.

Thomas, a sophomore guard from Cincinnati,  averaged 22.0 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting .600 from the field and the 3-pooint line and .917 from the free throw line in leading the Seminoles to wins over Charlotte and 20th-ranked Massachusetts. Thomas scored a career high of 26 points and pulled down a career high of seven rebounds (including a career-high of three offensive rebounds) in Florida State’s 106-62 win over Charlotte and totaled 18 points and four rebounds in the Seminoles’  60-55 neutral court win over UMass in the Orange Bowl Classic.

Thomas was especially effective in the first half against Charlotte, as he scored 22 points in 13 minutes of play and  led Florida State to a 52-30 lead at intermission. In the final 10 minutes against a UMass team that entered the game with a 10-0 record and a No. 2 RPI ranking, Thomas totaled eight points, one rebound and one blocked shot as Florida State rallied to gain the come-from-behind victory.  Twice he cut Florida State’s deficit to one point, gave the Seminoles a lead with a lay-up at the 6:05 mark then closed out the victory with two of his career-high eight free throws.  His blocked shot with 6:14 left kept the Seminoles’ within a one-point deficit and his ensuing lay-up nine seconds later gave Florida State a one-point lead. 

The Blue Devils’ Parker averaged 22.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game in leading No. 8 Duke to wins over Gardner-Webb and No. 22 UCLA. The freshman out of Chicago shot 56.0 percent (14-of-25) from the field, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, while making all 11 free throws as the Blue Devils improved to 9-2 on the year. In the win over Gardner-Webb, Parker tallied 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. He also added six rebounds and a steal in 26 minutes of action.

Parker capped off the week with an impressive all-around performance in an 80-63 win over UCLA. He recorded his ninth 20-point game and his third double-double of the season, finishing with a game-high 23 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Parker went 7-of-13 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range, and 5-of-5 from the foul line in the win.
