Virginia’s Kirby, Florida State’s Smit earn recognition
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia sophomore Nathan Kirby has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher of the Week, while Florida State senior shortstop Casey Smit earned ACC Player of the Week honors.
Kirby threw the third no-hitter by an ACC pitcher this season and the fifth by a Virginia pitcher over the past 50 years as the Cavaliers blanked Pitt by a 4-0 score on Friday night. The Midlothian, Va., left-hander struck out 18 batters, one shy of the ACC and Virginia school record. Kirby recorded his first career complete game (his previous longest stint was 6 2/3 innings) while retiring the final 13 Panther batters of the game. He struck out the side in the second, third and fourth innings, part of a stretch in which he retired 10 straight batters via strikeouts.
Florida State’s Smit stepped in with starting shortstop Justin Gonzalez slowed by illness and led the Seminoles to a 4-0 week that included a three-game ACC series sweep of Notre Dame. Smit went 8-for-17 on the week (.471) while driving in nine runs. His biggest performance came in an 8-7, 12-inning Friday night win over the Fighting Irish, which saw the Tampa, Fla., native drive in a career-high four runs in a performance that included the game-winning walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th and his first collegiate home run – a two-run shot – in the third. Smit drove in at least two runs in three of Florida State’s four games and registered the go-ahead base hit in three of the Seminoles’ wins.
