Georgia Tech’s Justus and Duke’s Van Orden recognized
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Georgia Tech freshman shortstop Connor Justus has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Duke senior Drew Van Orden earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Justus paced the offense by batting .471 with a pair of home runs, a pair of doubles and eight RBIs during the Yellow Jackets’ 4-1 week that included a series victory over No. 2 Florida State. Justus, who slugged a team-best .941 for the week, delivered a two-run first-inning single to help give Georgia Tech a 5-0 lead over Florida State in an eventual 5-3 win on Friday.
The Cartersville, Ga., native had two more hits, including a double, and scored twice in a 12-4 win on Saturday. The rookie also extended his errorless streak to 20 games and helped turn three of Georgia Tech’s five double plays. Two of the double plays came in the Friday and Saturday wins over Florida State and ended Seminole innings in which the bases were loaded. Justus currently owns a six-game hitting streak, and his .313 batting average ranks 18th in the ACC and is the third best by a freshman.
Duke’s Van Orden shut out NC State for eight innings and struck out 11 to key the Blue Devils to a 2-0 win in last Friday night’s ACC series opener. The Manhattan Beach, Calif., right-hander surrendered just three hits with one walk and did not face more than four batters in any inning. Van Orden struck out at least one Wolfpack hitter in each of his eight innings and fanned two in the first, second and fourth frames.
After the Blue Devils grabbed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, Van Orden retired 15 of the next 17 batters to maintain the lead heading into the ninth. The 6-foot-3 Van Orden yielded just one hit over his final five innings and did not permit a baserunner after the fifth.
