Virginia’s Fisher named Player of the Week; Duke’s Matuella claims pitching honor
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia outfielder Derek Fisher has been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week of the 2014 season, while Duke’s Michael Matuella earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Fisher hit .455 in three weekend games as Virginia posted two wins in the Hughes Brothers Challenge in Wilmington, N.C. Fisher had at least one hit in all three games to lead the top-ranked Cavaliers, who bounced back from an opening loss to Kentucky with wins over VMI and UNC Wilmington. The Rexmont, Pa., native had two hits in each of Virginia’s wins, including two that drove in runs in Sunday’s 7-2 victory over UNCW. Fisher scored five times in the three games to lead all ACC players in weekend play and had three RBIs.
Matuella, a sophomore right-hander from Great Falls, Va., was perfect in five innings of work in the Blue Devils’ 5-1 over Binghamton. Matuella needed just 71 pitches to retire all 15 batters he faced without allowing a ball out of the infield. In addition, he more than doubled his previous career high for strikeouts in a game (four) by fanning nine Bearcat batters. He struck out the side in both the first and third innings and totaled two or more strikeouts in three frames.
