GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Two Atlantic Coast Conference record-setters from Notre Dame highlight the league’s final Indoor Track and Field Performer of the Week selections of the 2019-20 season.
The Fighting Irish men’s distance bettered its own ACC record set last season to earn weekly track honors, while Rachel Tanczos repeated as ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week after shattering the conference mark and moving to the top of the current national charts in the women’s weight throw.
Clemson sprinter Rebekah Smith was recognized as ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week, while Virginia’s Brenton Foster was named top Men’s Field Performer as conference teams wrapped up the regular season and turned their attention to this week’s ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. That three-day event is set for Thursday through Saturday at Notre Dame’s Loftus Sports Center.

Edward Cheatham (400),
Sam Voelz (800) and
Yared Nuguse (1600) won the Alex Wilson Invitational race in a photo finish on its home track with a time of 9:25.80, just .04 seconds ahead of Wisconsin. Notre Dame’s time of 9:25.80 stands as the program, track and ACC record and is also the second fastest time ever recorded in NCAA indoor track and field history for the event.
Women’s Field Performer of the Week
Rachel Tanczos, Notre Dame, Jr.; Danielsville, Pa.
In addition to being recognized as an ACC Performer of the Week for the fourth time this season, Tanczos was named the USTFCCCA National Division I Female Athlete of the Week on Tuesday. The Notre Dame junior’s winning throw of 23.31 meters (76-5.75) on her first attempt at the Alex Wilson Invitational broke an ACC mark that had stood since 2002, topped her own school record and ranks 11th all-time in NCAA Indoor Track and Field history.
Women’s Track Performer of the Week
Rebekah Smith, Clemson, Sr.; Irmo, S.C.
Smith’s time of 7.23 in the women’s 60 meters at the LSU Twilight was the fastest in the meet among collegians and placed second overall in the 38-runner field. Smith, who now ranks second in the ACC and is tied for 11th nationally, posted a PR with last Friday’s time and owns the third-best 60 meters time in Clemson history.
Men’s Field Performer of the Week
Brenton Foster, Virginia, Sr.; Townsville, Australia
Foster set a UVA record at the Virginia Tech Challenge in the high jump with his mark of 2.26m (7-5). Foster cleared 2.22m on his second attempt to top the prior UVA record mark of 2.21m that he shared with Herman Moore. He cleared a height of 2.26m on his second attempt at the bar, achieving a mark that currently ranks fourth in the NCAA, leads the ACC and ranks 17th in the world.
