Virginia’s Rachel Robinson named Scholar-Athlete of the Year
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia junior Rachel Robinson has been named the 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team announced on Wednesday.
Robinson, a first team All-American and an All-ACC first team honoree, started all 23 games for the Cavaliers as a defensive midfielder. She ended the season with five goals and four assists for 14 points. She scored the game-winning goals against Penn State and in the regular-season meeting versus Duke, as well as Virginia's lone goal in the NCAA semifinal game against Princeton.
Robinson has twice been named to the Longstreth/NFHCA All-South Region Second Team, and earlier this month was announced as a member of the 2020 U.S. Women's National Team. The Mount Joy, Pennsylvania, native majors in Kinesiology and has twice been named to the ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA National Academic squad in addition to the ACC Honor Roll.
Each of the ACC’s seven field hockey programs are represented on the All-ACC Academic Field Hockey Team, including a league-tying 18 student-athletes that were also All-ACC selections.
This year’s All-ACC Academic Team also features 12 2019 Longstreth/NFHCA All-Americans – Virginia’s Robinson, Boston College’s Sarah Dwyer, Duke’s Marguax Paolino, Louisville’s Mercedes Pastor, and North Carolina’s Yentl Leemans and Erin Matson (first team); Louisville’s Alli Bitting, Virginia’s Amber Ezechiels and Wake Forest’s Anne van Hoof (second team), and Duke’s Jillian Wolgemuth, Louisville’s Carter Ayars and North Carolina’s Marissa Creatore (third team).
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
