NC State’s King Named ACC Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State senior midfielder Tziarra King has been named the 2019 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines the All-ACC Academic Team, announced Tuesday by the league office.

King, a nutrition major, was tabbed a First-Team All-ACC selection, a United Soccer Coaches All-Region honoree and a Third-Team United Soccer Coaches All-American following her final season in a Wolfpack uniform. A standout student in the classroom, she earned First-Team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors and was also recognized as a USC Scholar All-American.

King finished the year with 13 goals and 32 points to rank among the top three in the conference and top 35 nationally in both categories. The Sicklerville, New Jersey, native made history earlier this month when she became the first NC State student-athlete to be selected in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Draft. King was chosen with the eighth overall pick by the Utah Royals FC.

NC State’s Ricci Walkling and King are the only two student-athletes to be named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the fourth time in as many years. Clemson’s Julie Mackin, Louisville’s Emina Ekic, Virginia’s Zoe Morse and Virginia Tech’s Mandy McGlynn each claimed a spot on the team for the third time.

A total of 23 student-athletes who earned All-ACC honors this season also secured spots on the academic team, highlighted by Florida State’s Malia Berkely, the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year and North Carolina’s Maycee Bell, the conference’s rookie of the year.

Additionally, eight of the 11 student-athletes on the All-ACC Freshman Team also received All-ACC Academic Team honors.

Virginia led all schools with eight selections, followed by Duke with seven. Clemson and NC State each had six honorees, while Florida State, Louisville, North Carolina and Wake Forest each had five student-athletes named to the team.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
