GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke senior forward Kayla McCoy has been named the 2018 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team, announced Thursday by the league office.
McCoy, a cultural anthropology major, was a 2018 first-team All-ACC selection, a first-team United Soccer Coaches All-American, and a Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy semifinalist. She also earned USC first-team Scholar All-America honors and third-team Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
McCoy is joined on the All-ACC Academic Team by Boston College’s Sam Coffey, the ACC’s 2018 Midfielder of the Year, and Clemson’s Sam Staab, the ACC’s 2018 Defensive Player of the Year. Staab is the only four-time recipient on this year’s team. Florida State’s Natalia Kuikka, the 2018 Honda Sports Award winner, earned a spot on the team after helping lead her team to the ACC and NCAA titles.
ACC regular-season champion and NCAA runner-up North Carolina led all schools with seven selections, followed by Duke (6), national champion Florida State (6), Virginia (6), Wake Forest (6), NC State (5), Boston College (4), Clemson (4), Louisville (4), Virginia Tech (4), Notre Dame (2) and Miami (1).
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
