2018 All-ACC Academic Cross Country Teams Announced

Louisville’s Wasike, Notre Dame’s Williams named Scholar-Athletes of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Thirty-two All-Atlantic Coast Conference performers, including eight All-Americans, secured spots on the 2018 All-ACC Academic Cross Country teams announced Thursday by the conference office.

Louisville junior Dorcas Wasike is the ACC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Notre Dame senior Anthony Williams claimed Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors to head up the All-ACC Academic Teams.

Wasike, the 2018 ACC Women’s Cross Country Champion, was also voted the league’s Women’s Runner of the Year by the conference head coaches in December.  The native of Kitale, Kenya, earned All-America honors for the second consecutive season with her 14th-place 6K time at the NCAA finals. That solid showing came eight days after Wasike raced to the individual title at the Southeast Regional Championships.

In addition to the ACC Women’s Championship, in which she registered a gold medal time of 20:08.1, she also captured individual crowns at the Louisville Cross Country Classic and the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic. Wasike became the first Louisville female athlete to claim an ACC cross country championship and to be named a USTFCCCA Regional Athlete of the Year.

A nursing major, Wasike earned spots on both the Louisville Dean’s List and the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll each of the previous two semesters. She has also achieved the status of Red and Black Scholar, which is awarded to university student-athletes who achieve a GPA of 3.25 or higher.

Notre Dame’s Williams ran to a sixth-place finish at the ACC Championships to help lead the Fighting Irish to their first men’s cross country team title since joining the league in 2013. Williams followed up with a 23rd-place finish to earn All-Great Lakes Regional honors on Nov. 9, helping Notre Dame to a second-place team finish and spot in the NCAA Championship.

Williams capped off the season with a 97th-place 10K finish on a snowy course in Madison, Wisconsin, to help the Fighting Irish to a 14th-place team finish at the NCAA finals.

A native of Bloomington, Indiana, Williams is on track to graduate with honors this spring with a degree in biological sciences.

In addition to Wasike and Williams, the 2018 All-ACC Academic Cross Country Teams include ACC Men’s Champion and ACC Men’s Runner of the Year Peter Seufer of Virginia Tech, ACC Men’s Freshman of the Year Zach Facioni of Wake Forest, and ACC Women’s Freshman of the Year Jacqueline Gaughan of Notre Dame.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
