2018 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team Announced

NC State’s Brian Brown named Scholar-Athlete of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – NC State’s Brian Brown, the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, leads the 2018 All-ACC Academic Team as announced today.

The 2018 ACC Pitcher of the Year and All-ACC First Team honoree, Brown was named to the Collegiate Baseball All-America Second Team and the NCBWA All-America Third Team. The senior broke the program record for career starts with 61, and recorded 25 career wins to tie for fifth most in Wolfpack history.

A sport management major from Glenmoore, Pennsylvania, Brown was named to the Dean’s List in the spring and is the first from NC State to be named ACC Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year since the award was established in the fall of 2007. He ranked sixth in the league with a 2.74 earned run average and fourth in innings pitched (98.2), and finished the year with a 7-2 record with two complete games, 98 strikeouts, and a .229 opposing batting average.

Eighteen players were selected to the All-ACC Academic Team after being named to the All-ACC Team: Clemson's Logan Davidson and Ryley Gilliam, Duke's Jimmy Herron, Florida State's Drew Mendoza and Cal Raleigh, Georgia Tech's Chase Murray, Louisville's Nick Bennett, Danny Oriente, and Josh Stowers, Miami's Evan McKendry, North Carolina's Michael Busch, NC State's Patrick Bailey, Brian Brown, Brett Kinneman, and Joe O'Donnell, Notre Dame's Eric Gilgenbach and Matt Vierling, and Virginia's Daniel Lynch.

Four players – Duke’s Joey Loperfido, NC State’s Bailey, Virginia’s Andrew Abbott, and Virginia Tech’s Ian Seymour – earned ACC All-Freshman Team honors.

Eight players on the All-ACC Academic Team also earned All-America recognition: Clemson’s Gilliam and Davidson, Duke’s Ethan DeCaster, Florida State’s Raleigh, Louisville’s Stowers, and NC State’s Brown, Kinneman, and O’Donnell.

NC State’s Brown was named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the fourth time in his career, while Duke’s Zack Kone and NC State’s Brett Kinneman earned their third career accolade.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
