Miami’s Perez-Somarriba named Player of the Year
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Miami’s Estela Perez-Somarriba headlines the Atlantic Coast Conference’s yearly award winners and 2018 All-ACC Women’s Tennis Team.
The honors, announced Thursday, were determined by a vote of the leagues head coaches.
Duke’s Kelly Chen was selected as the Freshman of the Year, and Blue Devil head coach Jamie Ashworth was named Coach of the Year.
Perez-Somarriba posted a 21-1 record in singles during dual matches, and earned the No. 3 seed for the NCAA Singles Championship. A native of Madrid, she is also ranked No. 3 in the Oracle/ITA Rankings and has clinched her second straight ITA All-America honor. Perez-Somarriba’s 24-1 mark includes a 13-1 record against ranked opponents.
Chen will also make an appearance at the NCAA Singles Championship and has been ranked as high as No. 22 in the nation in singles. The rookie from Cerritos, California, leads Duke with 35 wins and is currently riding a 17-match win streak. Chen has a 7-6 record against ranked opponents this year.
Ashworth has led Duke to a 22-3 record following ACC Tournament play, the No. 1 seed in the ACC Championship, and the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Under his watch, the Blue Devils lead the league in 2018 All-ACC selections with five players earning the distinction.
