Greensboro, N.C. (theacc.com)— NC State senior Michael Macchiavello defeated Virginia Tech’s Jared Haught, 3-1, to take the national championship at 197 pounds Saturday night before an NCAA Wrestling Championship record crowd of 19,776 fans at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
Macchiavello, the No. 4 seed in the 197-pound bracket from Monroe, North Carolina, defeated Haught, the No. 3 seed from Parkersburg, West Virginia. The bout was a rematch of their meeting for the ACC Championship on March 3 won by Haught in ultimate overtime.
The national championship by Macchiavello was the 18th by an ACC wrestler in the history of the NCAA Championship.
The win by Macchiavello brought to a close one of the most successful NCAA Wrestling Championship performances in ACC history. The ACC began the Championship with its highest amount of qualifiers (41) and placed more wrestlers in the semifinals (8) than any time in its history.
In all, the league had 10 All-Americas, the second-highest total in its history. ACC wrestlers recorded 14 upsets of higher seeded opponents. And for the first time, a pair of ACC wrestlers met in the finals of an NCAA wrestling championship when Jared Haught and Michael Macchiavello faced each other in the 197-pound finals.
“I don't have any words, said Macchiavello. “It's a great feeling. I think I was thinking about if Haught wouldn't have made it to the finals, you could have potentially made the argument, oh, if I had won, which I did, thankfully, if I had won, oh, he won because the way the bracket played out, you know what I'm saying? Because he's the only guy who beat me twice in the year.
“And for me it was a great challenge because it's about the fact that if I won the NCAA title beating him then I was the best 197-pounder in the country this weekend. So I knew that was my challenge going forward and it excited me, and I was happy to take it head on.”
The win by Macchiavello allowed NC State, coached by Pat Popolizio, to tie Michigan for fourth place in the team standings in the NCAA Championship, tying the best finish by an ACC team set in 2016 by Virginia Tech.
State finished fourth in the team standings with 80.0 points, followed by Virginia Tech (eighth), North Carolina (20th), Duke (22nd) and Virginia and Pitt (31st).
NC State redshirt freshman Hayden Hidlay (Lewistown, Pennsylvania) had his unbeaten run end at 26 matches when he dropped a 6-2 decision to the No. 3 seed Jason Nolf of Penn State in the championship match at 157 pounds. Hidlay finished in second place with an overall 26-1 record. He was the last freshman nationally to remain unbeaten until his loss to Nolf.
Earlier in the afternoon session, unseeded NC State redshirt freshman Tariq Wilson (Steubenville, Ohio) capped off an impressive championship in which he defeated three top-five seeds in the 133-pound bracket, scoring a 17-8 major decision over the No. 3 seed in Ohio State’s Luke Pletcher to claim third place. Earlier in the Championship, Wilson scored a major decision over No. 4 seed Kaid Brock of Oklahoma State and defeated No. 5 seed John Erneste of Missouri.
Also in the consolations, Virginia Tech sophomore David McFadden (West Milford, New Jersey) pinned No. 5 Alex Marinelli of Iowa at the 5:14 mark of their 165-pound match. McFadden claimed fifth place for his second All-America citation.
North Carolina junior Chip Ness (Duluth, Georgia) won a 6-3 decision over No. 9 Maxwell Dean of Cornell in their 184-pound bout. Ness claimed seventh place with the win and capped a Tournament in which the unseeded wrestler defeated three top 10 seeds to earn his first All-America honors.
North Carolina senior Troy Heilmann (South Plainfield, New Jersey) won his first consolation match, defeating third-seed Grant Leeth of Missouri, 3-1. But Heilmann then dropped a tight, 3-2 decision to No. 11 Matthew Kolodzik of Princeton to finish in fourth place for his first All-America citation.
This year marked the first since 1995 that North Carolina had two of its wrestlers earn All-America honors.
NC State senior Kevin Jack (Danbury, Connecticut) won four straight matches in the consolations to earn All-America honors for the third time at 141 pounds. But Zack then dropped his final two very close bouts, the last, a 9-7 overtime decision to No. 8 Nick Lee of Penn State, and finished in sixth-place.
NC State finished with four All-Americas in Wilson, Jack, Hidlay and Macciavello, the most ever for the Wolfpack.
Virginia Tech junior Zack Zavatsky (Latrobe, Pennsylvania) dropped a pair of consolation matches to No. 7 Taylor Venz of Nebraska and No. 5 Domenic Abounader of Michigan to finish in sixth place in the 184-pound class. The All-America honor was the first for Zavatsky. He and Ness gave the ACC two All-Americas at 184.
Duke senior Jacob Kasper (Lexington, Ohio) pinned No. 5 Samuel Stoll of Iowa at the 1:15 mark of their bout, but then in turn was pinned by No. 6 Omar Dhesi of Oregon State at the 1:46 mark of their bout. Kasper, seeded fourth in the Championship, finished in fourth place to earn his second straight All-America honor.
