ACC Announces Indoor Track & Field Performers of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Clemson’s John Lewis, Florida State’s Shauna Helps and the NC State duo of Joshua Davis and Lauren Evans were recognized as the first Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Performers of the Week of the 2017-18 season.
 
Consideration for week one selection included performances by student-athletes competing on teams that opened with December meets prior to the holidays. The remaining ACC teams that have yet to launch their seasons are scheduled to do so over the next two weekends.

ACC Men’s Track Performer of the Week
John Lewis, Clemson
The junior from Philadelphia currently ranks seventh nationally and No. 1 in the ACC in the mile following his 4:06.63 effort in the Clemson Opener. He followed up with a first-place finish in the 1,000 meters in the Orange and Purple Invitational with a time of 2:21.96 that shattered a 33-year-old school record. Lewis also ran a leg on the Tigers’ 4x400 relay team that posted a first-place time of 3:09.76 and ranks fourth nationally.
 
ACC Women’s Track Performer of the Week
Shauna Helps, Florida State
Helps opened her junior season with the No. 2 200-meter time in the country (23.82) – tops in the ACC – to finish second overall at Clemson’s Orange & Purple Invitational. The Belvedere, Jamaica, junior pushed USA national team standout Joanna Atkins to the wire in her effort, which bested a field that included sprinters from perennial powers Florida, Georgia, Clemson and North Carolina A&T. The two-time ACC Outdoor 100-meter champion and record holder came back 20 minutes later to help the Noles’ 4x400 relay to a second-place finish with a strong third leg.
 
ACC Men’s Field Performer of the Week
Joshua Davis, NC State
Davis was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Men's Division I National Athlete of the Week following his dominating weight throw in the JDL College Kick-Off Classic. Progressing with each throw, the redshirt senior from Pelham, North Carolina, notched distances of 71-7.5 (21.83m), 72- (22.00m), 72-4 (22.05m) and 76-3 (23.24m). The 76-3 toss currently ranks No. 1 nationally, broke Davis’ previous NC State record by nearly four feet and set a new JDL Fast Track facility record.
 
ACC Women’s Field Performer of the Week
Lauren Evans, NC State
Evans’ weight throw of 67-8 (20.62m) in the JDL Kick-Off Classic currently ranks fifth nationally and is No. 2 on the NC State’s all-time list. The redshirt junior from Fayetteville, North Carolina, ranks 24th nationally in the shot put following her throw of 49-4.5 (15.05m) that also came in the JDL Kick-Off and placed second among a field of 46.
