The Independence Bowl is the nation’s 11th-oldest bowl game, dating back to 1976. Beginning in 2010, the Independence Bowl matched up teams from the ACC and the Mountain West Conference. That partnership ran through the 2011 season, and it resumed partnerships with the SEC and ACC through 2013.

From 2014 to 2019, the Independence Bowl will have primary conference agreements with the ACC and SEC. For the first time in its history, the bowl game also signed secondary agreements with Conference USA and the American Athletic Conference.
