Remember this day, ACC fans, because it's going to be historic.

The ACC has managed to do what no other conference has been able to, and get Notre Dame to embrace change. Not the Big Ten. Not the Big 12. The ACC. "The only conference with whom we entered into substantive discussions

Most importantly, it gives the ACC peace of mind in knowing that the nation's most valuable free agent is already a member of its ranks if - or more likely when - college football's new playoff reality finally forces Notre Dame to seek conference affiliation.

Does that mean Notre Dame might eventually join the ACC as a full member? Most in South Bend would prefer to preserve football independence, so don't count on it. Still, the Fighting Irish have taken a seat at the table alongside Swofford, and history suggests he can talk anyone into just about anything.

The agreement stipulates Notre Dame plays five football games per year against ACC opponents, but not compete for the league title and play eight games, as a full member would...

...As for the ACC, the compromise allows its football programs access to a major brand that sells tickets and delivers TV ratings. It will also allow ACC commissioner John Swofford to seek additional compensation from the league's current long-term deal with ESPN.

"This solidifies us as the best and deepest basketball conference in the country with the success that Mike Brey has been able to establish with Notre Dame basketball," Georgia Tech head coach Brian Gregory said. "They add another power program to our league. ... The leadership of the ACC has done it again. I think they hit a home run."

But joining the ACC "wasn't a tough decision," said Rev. John Jenkins, the Notre Dame president.

"I don't think there's a better situation than the situation we have ..." Jenkins said. "The ACC has allowed us to retain a tradition that's so central to our identity in football while we're joining a conference that athletically as well as academically fits Notre Dame perfectly."

Even as a partial member in football, Notre Dame will raise the ACC's profile. It will improve the conference's financial outlook as well...

News broke Wednesday morning that Notre Dame agreed to join the ACC...

...The news has particularly significant implications in men's lacrosse as the Fighting Irish have emerged as one of the game's strongest and most consistent programs.
