Bob Bowman has been there every step of the way for Michael Phelps -- through all the gold medals, world records, championships and, yes, even the occasional missteps.

While Bowman describes himself as a mediocre swimmer -- he competed at Florida State in the 1980s -- his real knack was teaching others how to swim.

It's something the U.S. was able to survive on Saturday, but something they clearly need to clean up, quickly. "They made a lot of shots," said point guard Chris Paul. "They just executed their offense. They set ball-screens and they rolled, Darius Songaila got into the paint, but we've gotta do a better job of communicating defensively and we gotta talk better."

"We're a bit disappointed. We had obviously hoped to finish a little higher," U.S. captain Lauren Crandall said to the Associated Press. "We're happy with some of the play we've done. There are spots that we definitely need to improve on, and we'll look to do that, but right now it's just coming out to South Africa, making sure we bring our game."

Two Clemson runners, facing stiff competition, said goodbye to the 2012 Olympics in their respective events on Saturday.

"I got a lot of good experience and felt good about my performance," Fraser said. "My competitors are all talented ... you have to give it your best every round. The crowd was crazy. My heart was jumping, and my adrenaline was pumping. It was so exciting."

After qualifying for the semifinals on Friday, Wesh said she had reached her goal for these Olympics. She now plans on coming back and doing more. "It is a great feeling to be only 21 and be here. In four years when I come back to Brazil, I will know exactly what to do," she said.
