The victory advances the U.S. to the gold-medal game against Japan, which defeated France, 2-1, in the earlier semifinal

Morgan's goal was set up by Heather O'Reilly of East Brunswick, N.J. Taking a ball from Abby Wambach, O'Reilly lofted a cross in front, where Morgan, the star forward who created havoc the entire game up front, knocked it past a leaping goalkeeper Erin McLeod, about a minute before the whistle would finally blow.

Yet Hunter Kemper winning a medal isn't beyond the realm of possibility. A four-time Olympic triathlete, he has an established history of finishing higher in each Games: from 17th in Sydney, to 9th in Athens to 7th in Beijing. "Knowing that this is his last kick of the can, and knowing how incredibly he came back from injury this past year, Kemper is my pick for bronze," said Bob Babbitt, a pioneer of the sport in California.

Shalane Flanagan's participation in the 2012 Olympic women's marathon in London yesterday morning wasn't the destination, but just another stop in what has been a long and successful running career.

The Americans (5-0) will play Australia (3-2) in a quarterfinal game Wednesday. LeBron James added 18 points, getting the Americans' first seven of the third quarter before Durant took over. Chris Paul finished with 17. Two nights after surviving their first real test in a 99-94 victory over Lithuania, it seemed the Americans might be headed for another tight finish. Argentina shot 56 percent in the first half and the U.S. led just 60-59.

Minutes later, it was effectively over.
