GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference is well represented in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Fall Standings released today with five ACC schools in the top 10, three more than any other conference. In addition to holding half of the top 10 spots, the ACC is the only league with three schools in the top five, and also placed ten in the top 61.
North Carolina leads the way for the conference in second place with 254 points, trailing only Stanford. The Tar Heels had an impressive fall campaign, including a national championship in men’s soccer as well as a second place finish for field hockey. North Carolina also finished ninth in women’s soccer.
Maryland is just behind North Carolina in third place with 228 points. The Terrapins captured their second straight field hockey NCAA title and finished ninth in both men’s and women’s soccer.
Florida State follows the Terps in fourth place with 217 points. The Seminoles had two top five finishes in women’s cross country and women’s soccer. They also finished 12th in men’s cross country. Tonight the Seminoles volleyball team will play in the Final Four in San Antonio, Tex., marking the first appearance for an ACC school.
Two more ACC schools, Duke and Boston College, are in the top ten, ranking sixth and ninth, respectively. Each school had three teams place in the top 25, including top 10 finishes for Duke field hockey and both Duke and Boston College women’s soccer.
Rounding out the ACC’s presence in the Top 25 are Wake Forest and Virginia at 19th and 22nd, respectively. NC State, Virginia Tech and Miami also place in the top 61.
