The SAAC bowling trip

Beyond the ACCtion: SAAC Invades the ACC Office

Oct. 3, 2008

"Beyond the ACCtion" is a special feature of theACC.com which offers insight in to the Atlantic Coast Conference, away from the field of competition.

The ACC SAAC meeting started on Thursday, October 2. The representatives arrived on Thursday, with meetings scheduled for Friday.

Thursday
The SAAC members started arriving during the afternoon and checked into the hotel. At 5:30, everyone met in the Board Room at the ACC Office for a "50-cent tour" by Eric Wood and then a dinner with the ACC's senior administration. While dining on barbecue chicken, ribs and macaroni & cheese, the student-athletes met the ACC staff and talked about how they arrived in the position they occupy. Following dinner, everyone in the room introduced themselves to the group. The ACC staff told everyone his/her background and gave some advice on how to succeed in the workplace. The advice ranged from respect for coworkers to building networks. Several staff members discussed how they are now in positions that do not relate to their college degrees, or how they use the degree in a unique environment.

Following dinner, the staff went home while the SAAC members went to the bowling alley to try to knock down a few pins. After a warm-up game, the group was divided into Divisions, Atlantic vs. Coastal, to see who would eat first at lunch on Friday. Everyone was excited with bragging rights on the line. NC State men's basketball player Brandon Costner rolled a 189 to claim the best round of the evening. Needless to say, his round propelled the Atlantic Division to the first-food rights on Friday.
