ACC Releases 50th Anniversary Fencing Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Fencing Team was announced today by Commissioner John Swofford. The 24-member team was selected based upon the seasons that fencing was recognized as a league sport. It was a discontinued sport after the 1980 ACC Championship. The 24-member team was determined using the results from the 1971-80 ACC Championships and includes the individual champions as decided by the league's 50th Anniversary Committee.

North Carolina placed nine members on the Golden Anniversary team while Maryland placed seven, Clemson (3), Duke and Virginia (2) and NC State (1).

Below, in alphabetical order is the ACC's 50th Anniversary Fencing team. The years listed indicate when they were an ACC Individual Champion.

Thubert E. Baker, North Carolina
Individual ACC Sabre Champion - 1974.

Charles Brown, North Carolina
Individual ACC Epee Champion - 1975.

David Brown, North Carolina
Individual ACC Sabre Champion - 1972.

Thomas Clark, Duke
Qualified for the 1972 Nationals.

Robert Crowmartie, North Carolina
Individual ACC Foil Champion - 1972.

Mark Eisenhardt, Maryland
1979 ACC Epee Champion. Team: 1979 ACC Runner-up.

Manuel Garcia, NC State
1971 ACC fencing champion (Ssabre fencing) ... Finished 12th at NCAA Championships.

Steve Hatten, Virginia
Won the foil competition at the 1971 ACC Championships with a 12-2 record ... had 64 touches for and 27 touches against in the competition ... finished 21st in the foil competition at the NCAA Championships that year ... also finished 20th in the foil at the 1970 NCAA Championships anad 32nd in 1969.

Vince Mascia, Virginia
Won the sabre competition at the 1975 ACC Championships with a 14-3 record ... was a member of the All-ACC team ... earned All-ACC honors in the sabre in 1974 ... co-captain of the Virginia team in 1975 and was the team captain in 1976.

Mark Meudt, Maryland
1980 ACC Foil Champion.

Edmund Pettiss, Duke
Finished 19th at the 1972 Nationals

George Podgorski, Clemson
He was the epee division champion in the ACC in 1977 ... was Clemson's first ACC Champion in fencing regardless of weapon.

Ken Poyd, Maryland
1976, 1978 ACC Foil Champion. Team: 1978 ACC Champions, 1976 ACC Runner-up.

Steve Renshaw, Clemson
Who was a highly touted fencer in high school, fenced for Clemson for four years in the sabre division ... his freshman year, he recorded a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Championships to win All-America honors ... his sophomore year, he was named to 1st team All ACC ... was a fencing All-American three years in a row ... his junior year, placed fourth in the sabre division at the NCAA Championships ... in 1980, captured the ACC Sabre Championship.

Jack Simes, Maryland
1978, 1979 ACC Sabre Champion. Team: 1978 ACC Champions, 1979 ACC Runner-up.

Bradley Thomas, Maryland
1979 ACC Foil Champion. Team: 1979 ACC Runner-up.

Jay Thomas, Clemson
Placed fifth in the epee division as a freshman ... named first-team All-ACC and recorded the most wins by a freshman in a season at Clemson ... was named to first-team All-ACC as a sophomore ... garnered Honorable Mention All American honors as well as first team All-Atlantic Regional as a junior ... named an All American his senior year, placing fourth overall in the NCAA Championships with a record of 45-5.
