    Former UVa Rower Shoop Wins Gold Medal

    BEIJING – Former UVa rower Lindsay Shoop was part of the winning United States women’s eight crew Sunday at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, as the Americans earned the gold medal in the event with a time of 6:05.34.

    Shoop, a Charlottesville native and two-time All-American in 2003 and 2004, rowed in the second seat in the crew. The U.S. stormed into the final race with impressive heat wins and dominated the final race from start to finish.

    Garnet & Bronze! FSU Sprinter Walter Dix Wins Olympic Bronze In The 100m

    BEIJING - Never doubt Walter Dix.

    Ever.

    Questioned countless times for not turning professional after his phenomenal junior year or after he injured his hamstring in the spring, the Florida State sprinter proved his merit against the best runners in the world on Saturday (August 16). Using his world-class closing speed, Dix passed the majority of the field in the final 40 meters of the finals of the 100m at the Summer Olympics to bring home the bronze medal with a personal-best time of 9.91.

    Flanagan Wins Bronze, Schmidt misses Semifinals

    BEIJING - Former Tar Heel Shalane Flanagan won the bronze medal Friday in the Women's 10,000-meter run. Flanagan, turned in an American record effort of 30:22.22, to become only the second American woman to medal in the 10k event since it became part of the Olympics in 1988. In 1992 Lynn Jennings also won the bronze medal.

    Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia, the two-time 10,000m world champion, won gold, in 29:54.56 an Olympic record. Elvan Abeylegesse of Turkey took silver in 29:56.34. The two became only the second and third women to run the 10k in under 30 minutes; Wang Junxia of China set the world record, 29:31.78, in 1993.

    Ward And Team USA Win Bronze Medal In Team Sabre Competition

    BEIJING – Incoming Duke freshman Rebecca Ward and USA teammates Sada Jacobson and Mariel Zagunis defeated France 45-38 to win the bronze medal in the team sabre competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics on Thursday in the Fencing Hall at the National Convention Centre.

    Ward, who will enroll at Duke in the fall, earned her second bronze medal at the 2008 summer games after claiming the bronze in the individual sabre competition behind teammates Jacobson and Zagunis on Saturday, August 9. Ward won six of her nine bouts in the team competition, including two of three in the bronze medal round. Fifth-seeded Ukraine took home the gold, while third-seeded China claimed the silver medal.

    Former UM Swimmer Earns Gold at Summer Olympics

    BEIJING - Former University of Miami swimmer Manon van Rooijen earned a gold medal while incoming freshman Kelci Bryant finished fourth in their respective events late Saturday/early Sunday during the Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

    Van Rooijen was a member of the gold medal winning Women's 4x100 Freestyle Relay swimming team for the Netherlands this past weekend as her team posted a winning time of 3:33.76. It was just 0:00.14 seconds off their current world record-holding time of 3:33.62 set back in March.
