SAAC in ACCtion: Sportsmanship at Florida State

Feb. 27, 2009

In an effort to highlight good sportsmanship around the conference, every two weeks, theACC.com will highlight a specific example of sportsmanship from a different school. This week we look at the efforts of Florida State's SAAC to promote sportsmanship through its own video message.
"The essence of competition is about respecting one another and that is the case for the fans just as much as the competitors."

Vires, Artes, Mores... Strength, Skill, and Character. These are the values that rest within the Florida State University crest and the roots of what our founders envisioned for every Seminole as they passed through our doors. As the 46,000 students walk under the oak trees that line our campus, Seminole student-athletes know that with character comes the most important aspect of competition - Sportsmanship.

In order to remind the entire student body, faculty, and most importantly fans, the Florida State University Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) decided to support the cause by creating its own unique sportsmanship video message. The original creation came about from an idea within SAAC after much discussion about how its members could share their concern with the fans that attend the many competitions on our campus.

The SAAC formed a Sportsmanship subcommittee which created the initial script outline. After collaborating with Seminole Productions, student-athletes finalized the script and then began filming quotes and clip segments individually. The final portion was filmed after a recent SAAC meeting, with the entire SAAC speaking in unison, representing the large number of student-athletes who support the importance of sportsmanship, not just by student-athletes, but by everyone involved in a competition setting.

As FSU SAAC President Javier Garcia-Tunon stated, "Hopefully this video let's the fans in attendance know what we're all about. The essence of competition is about respecting one another and that is the case for the fans just as much as the competitors."

Starting this spring, the sportsmanship commercial will be shown during ACC sporting events, as well as non-conference events, on our various video boards in conjunction with the audio ACC Sportsmanship Public Announcement. The intent is to display the influential collaboration between the ACC, Florida State athletics, and our student-athletes, to fans to emphasize the importance of sportsmanship.

Hopefully, the fans will recognize the importance of increasing positive support while decreasing the negative behaviors sometimes exhibited for teams in competition. We feel this will better exemplify the values we pursue - Strength, Skill and most importantly, Character. Go Noles!
