Boston College's Speer, Maryland's Martin Earn ACC Softball Weekly Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Boston College junior catcher Tory Speer and Maryland freshman pitcher Maddie Martin have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, announced Tuesday by the conference office.
Speer led the Eagles in six games as Boston College went 3-3 with wins over Colgate, Radford, and LIU Brooklyn. The junior had multiple RBIs in four games and hit walk-off home runs in back-to-back games against Radford and LIU Brooklyn. For the week, she drove in 11 runs on 11 hits, scored eight times, and had eight extra base hits.
The native of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., connected on home runs in five consecutive games while hitting .611 with an on-base percentage of .708 and a slugging percentage of 1.611. It is her third career weekly honor and first of the season.
Martin pitched four complete games to help Maryland go 5-2 last week. She faced 109 batters, giving up just four earned runs and striking out 23 hitters. Martin picked up the win against Hampton and threw a seven inning shutout against Valparaiso. Against Oklahoma State, the freshman threw 6.0 innings without giving up an earned run.
The native of Edmond, Okla., limited opposing hitters to a .223 batting average and finished the week with an earned run average of 1.40. It is her first ACC weekly honor.
