ACC Players of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina senior midfielder Kara Cannizzaro and Boston College sophomore goalie Emily Mata have been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced Tuesday by the conference.

Cannizzaro scored eight goals in a pair of road wins for the Tar Heels last week. In Thursday’s win at No. 6 Duke, she scored four times, including the game-winner in overtime, in a 12-11 victory over the Blue Devils. Cannizzaro also collected two ground balls, controlled a draw, and caused a game-high three turnovers.

In Saturday’s 18-11 win at Virginia Tech, the native of Cazenovia, N.Y., tied for game highs with four goals and five points while also tallying a caused turnover and a ground ball. North Carolina has won 11 games in a row, tied as the second-longest streak in program history. It is the third weekly award for Cannizzaro this season, and the second in consecutive weeks.

Mata made 20 saves and recorded a .455 save percentage last week as the Eagles went 1-1 against two top-10 opponents. Against No. 5 Syracuse, she made a season-high 11 saves on 35 shots. It is the second ACC Defensive Player of the Week award for Mata and her first of the season.

On Saturday against No. 9 Virginia, the native of Severna Park, Md., posted nine saves to lead the Eagles to the 10-7 win. Mata held Virginia to 2-of-6 on free position shots with two saves as the Eagles won their first game over an opponent ranked in the top 10 since defeating No. 7 Virginia on April 2, 2011.
