WBCA Recognizes Maryland's Frese and Thomas

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Maryland head coach Brenda Frese was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Region 2 Coach of the Year, and junior forward Alyssa Thomas has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Wade Trophy.
Frese is one of eight Regional Coaches of the Year and is finalist for the WBCA National Coach of the Year. Frese was named ACC Coach of the Year by her peers following a regular season in which she led her Terps to a 14-4 mark in the ACC. Maryland (26-7) will play in its 10th NCAA Championship Regional Semifinal against No. 1 seed Connecticut on Saturday, March 30 at 2:30 p.m.
The 2013 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year will be named during the third annual WBCA Awards Show on Monday, April 8, in New Orleans. This event is part of the WBCA National Convention and is held in conjunction with the NCAA® Women’s Final Four®.
Thomas, the ACC Player of the Year as named by the Blue Ribbon Panel, is currently averaging 19.0 points, 10.3 rebounds and 5.4 assists per game, and is the only player in the country to rank in the Top 50 in all three statistical categories. She also leads the ACC in all three categories.
Thomas is the only ACC representative in contention for the Wade Trophy, which is presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding NCAA Division I women’s basketball player.
The candidates were selected by a vote of committee members consisting of leading basketball coaches, journalists and administrators. The committee will select the winner of The State Farm Wade Trophy from among these 12 finalists who also are named to the 10-member WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team when it is chosen in April. The winner will be announced during the WBCA Awards Show, which will be held at 6 p.m. ET Monday, April 8, in the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center’s New Orleans Theatre. The event is part of the WBCA National Convention and is held in conjunction with the NCAA® Women’s Final Four®.
