Dec. 13, 2012

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Atlantic Coast Conference men’s soccer student-athletes collected multiple postseason honors following another banner year for the ACC men’s soccer.

Six ACC student-athletes were named All-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, including Maryland forward Patrick Mullins, who earned First Team All-America status for the first time in his career. Mullins, the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and a finalist for the prestigious MAC Hermann Trophy, finished his junior season as the league’s leading scorer with a career-high 44 points on 17 goals and 10 assists.

North Carolina sophomore defender Boyd Okwuonu was selected to the All-America Second Team, while Duke senior goalkeeper James Belshaw, Maryland senior defender London Woodberry and midfielder John Stertzer, and North Carolina sophomore midfielder Mikey Lopez earned All-America Third Team honors.

The ACC had 19 total selections on the NSCAA All-South and All-South Atlantic Region Teams, led by North Carolina with six. All six of the ACC’s All-America honorees were also selected to either the All-South or All-South Atlantic Region Team. Along with those six, Duke junior defender Sebastien Ibeagha, the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Wake Forest junior midfielder Jared Watts, NC State junior forward Alex Martinez and Boston College senior midfielder Kyle Bekker were also first team selections.

Nine student-athletes from five squads were recognized on TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Team of the Season. The Tar Heels and the Terps each had three selections, while Boston College, Duke and Virginia each had one honoree. Eight ACC freshmen were recognized on TopDrawerSoccer.com’s Freshman Team of the Season, including ACC Freshman of the Year Danny Garcia from North Carolina.
