Orange duo leads Syracuse to upset of No. 1 North Carolina

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following an upset of No. 1 North Carolina, Syracuse sophomore attacker Kayla Treanor and senior defender Natalie Glanell have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced Tuesday by the conference.

Treanor led against the Tar Heels with a career-high seven goals. She had four goals in the first half, two coming during a 4-0 Syracuse run that helped the Orange to a 6-3 halftime lead. After North Carolina tied the game at nine at the 12:27 mark of the second half, Treanor gave Syracuse the lead for good with her sixth goal. She also scored the game’s final goal with 3:10 remaining to give the Orange a 12-9 victory, and its second win against the No. 1-ranked team in the nation in program history.

Glanell anchored the Syracuse defense that held the top-scoring offense in the nation, which entered the game averaging 17.31 goals and 33.1 shots per game, to just nine goals on 16 shots. She caused three turnovers, as the Orange forced 11 total Tar Heel miscues. Glanell and the SU defense held North Carolina without a goal for nearly 16 minutes in the first half and for the final 12:27 as Syracuse scored three unanswered goals to break a 9-9 tie and post the three-goal victory.

Conference play wraps up this week with four matches. Seeds, matchups and game times for the 2014 ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship will be announced following the final regular season game on April 19.
