Syracuse’s First Varsity Four Named ACC Rowing Crew of the Week

18th-Ranked Orange Defeat 12th-Ranked Washington State at Clemson Invite
GREENSBORO, N.C. — Syracuse’s First Varsity Four crew has been honored as the ACC Crew of the Week after overcoming difficult weather racing conditions to win one seven-boat race and finish second in another and post the best time of the weekend in the Clemson Invite this past Saturday and Sunday at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C.
On Sunday, despite headwinds that were strong at times, the Orange First Varsity Four posted a time of 7:50.6 to outdistance a field that included 12th-ranked Washington State (7:52.0), Michigan State (8:01.4), Oregon State (8:16.7), Penn (8:22.2), Miami (8:24.9) and Gonzaga (8:26.9).
The time of 7:50.6 was better than any of the other 21 boats which competed in the First Varsity Four competition at the Clemson Invite.
The Syracuse First Varsity Four crew is composed of coxswain Alyssa Vasiliou (Bethesda, Md), Alex Zadrevec (Fairfield, Conn.), Saydee McQuay (North Dartmouth, Mass.), Anna Kaszycki (Brisbane, Australia) and Kristin Hanifin (Walpole, Mass.).
The Orange, coached by Justin Moore, captured their first 2014 ACC Crew of the Week honors.
Syracuse (8:27.10) came in second on Saturday, battling strong cross head winds and extremely high winds on Lake Hartwell, behind 15th-ranked Wisconsin (8:19.50), but ahead of 14th-ranked Harvard (8:28.70), 12th-ranked Washington State (8:36.00), Iowa (8:41.30), Indiana (8:51.00) and Dartmouth (8:55.70).
Syracuse will next be in action this Saturday on Lake Monticello outside of Charlottesville, Va., when it will face fourth-ranked Virginia, Michigan State and Duke.
The 2014 ACC Rowing Championship will be held May 16-17, on Lake Hartwell. Heats will be held beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 16, with the Petite and Grand Finals starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 17.
