Neff Powers ‘Noles to Win Over No. 7 Michigan
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State senior middle blocker Ashley Neff and Virginia Tech freshman outside hitter Lindsey Owens (pictured) have earned this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball honors, as Neff was named Player of the Week and Owens was tabbed Freshman of the Week.
Neff, who is the returning ACC Player of the Year, led the Seminoles to a win over No. 7 Michigan on Saturday afternoon. The win over the Wolverines is Florida State’s highest-ranked victory in school history based on the AVCA poll, eclipsing previous wins over three different eighth-ranked teams. In the marquee victory, Neff reached the double-digit block plateau for the eighth time in her career. Neff’s final kill in the fifth set against Michigan set up Florida State with a match point. For the weekend, Neff tallied 22 total blocks and moved into seventh place in school history with 488 career blocks.
Owens was one of the driving forces behind the Hokies’ undefeated weekend that pushed their ledger to 10-1 overall. The native of Orlando, Fla., was named to the All-Tournament team at the Hokie Classic, as she led Virginia Tech with 3.10 kills per set. Defensively, Owens posted strong numbers on the weekend with 20 digs and seven blocks. In a win against Duquesne, Owens recorded five service aces and scored all three set-winning points with an ace in the first set followed by set-deciding kills in the second and third sets.
