An ACC record seven players chosen in the first round
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Nine Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes were selected in the 2014 Women’s National Basketball Association Draft, which was held Monday evening at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Uncasville, Conn.
The ACC saw a record seven players selected in the first round to lead all leagues, including picks 3-5 and 9-12.
Notre Dame’s Kayla McBride was selected with the third overall pick by the San Antonio Stars, Maryland’s Alyssa Thomas went fourth to the New York Liberty and Florida State’s Natasha Howard was chosen with the fifth overall pick by the Indiana Fever. Four picks later saw Notre Dame’s Natalie Achonowa selected by Indiana at No. 9, NC State’s Markeisha Gatling went at No. 10 to the Chicago Sky, and Duke’s Chelsea Gray and Tricia Liston rounded out the first round at No. 11 (Connecticut Sun) and No. 12 (Minnesota Lynx).
The ACC has had at least one player selected in the first round each of the last nine drafts.
In addition to the ACC’s seven first round selections, Georgia Tech’s Tyaunna Marshall was selected with the second pick of the second round (14th overall), and NC State’s Kody Burke went to Washington with the eighth pick in the third round (32nd overall).
