NCAA title game featuring a pair of ACC teams for the second straight year
BALTIMORE, Md. – For the second straight year a pair of ACC women’s lacrosse teams will play for the NCAA Championship. No. 2 seed Syracuse topped No. 6 Virginia, 16-8, while No. 1 seed Maryland defeated No. 5 seed Northwestern, 9-6, to earn berths in Sunday’s championship game.
Maryland and Syracuse will meet on Sunday, May 25 at Johnny Unitas Stadium at 8:30 p.m. The game will air live on ESPNU and will be available on the WatchESPN App.
The Orange is looking for its first NCAA championship, while the Terrapins are seeking their 11 national title. Syracuse is making its second NCAA championship game appearance in the last three years, and second overall. Maryland earns a berth in the championship game for the 18th time in program history.
The two teams have met twice already this season with Maryland claiming both wins. The Terps won the regular season game 12-10 on March 10 and the rematch in the ACC Women’s Lacrosse Championship, 13-7, on April 27.
Notes: The all-ACC final marks the sixth time in NCAA history two ACC teams will play for the national championship (before 2001, the NCAA women’s lacrosse championship was the national collegiate championship) … The ACC is assured its second straight NCAA women’s lacrosse title and 15th overall … Over the last two years (2013 & 2014), the ACC is 17-1 against nonconference opponents in the NCAA Tournament … With Syracuse and Maryland both earning berths in the title game, current ACC membership combines for 30 appearances in the national championship game … ACC teams combined for a 73-10 record against nonconference opponents in 2014.
