Florida State’s Harris, Miami’s Newman honored after record-setting weekends
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Florida State’s James Harris has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Performer of the Week for the second time this season, while Miami’s Alysha Newman earned ACC Female Performer of the Week honors after both achieved high NCAA marks with school record-setting efforts last weekend.
Harris turned in a phenomenal weekend, registering top-10 nationally-ranked marks in the high jump and the 400-meter dash at the Cherry & Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. The Lanett, Ala., senior broke his own school record by clearing 2.27m (7-5.25) in a high jump duel with national leader Nick Ross of Arizona, placing second on Friday night. On Saturday, in the seeded 400-meter dash finals, Harris won in 46.43, which converts to 46.54 at altitude. That mark ranks 10th nationally and was the second-fastest indoor time in Florida State school history. Harris, who earned National Male Athlete of the Week Honorable Mention honors from the USTFCCCA, is the only athlete in the nation currently ranked in the top 10 individually in a field event and a running event
Miami’s Newman, a sophomore transfer from Delaware, Ontario, posted a history-making Hurricane debut. Newman placed first among a field of 19 in the pole vault at the 2014 Rod McCravy Memorial Meet at Lexington, Ky., setting a new University of Miami and meet record with her mark of 4.31m (14-1.75). Newman’s mark currently ranks first in the NCAA for the 2014 indoor season.
