Virginia’s Swanson to helm his first U-23 camp
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – A total of 15 ACC women’s soccer student-athletes have been called upon by the United States U-20 and U-23 women’s national teams to participate in training camps to be held in Sunrise, Fla., from Dec. 14-21.
Newly selected coach Scott Swanson, who is also the head coach of the Virginia women’s soccer team, will take over at the helm of the U-23 squad one year after leading the U-20 team to a championship at the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan.
Swanson takes over for Notre Dame’s Randy Waldrum and has previously coached the U.S. Women’s National Teams at numerous age levels. From 2000-2002, Swanson was the head coach of the U.S. U-16 Girls’ National Team and the U.S. U-18 Women’s National Team. In recent years he has served as an assistant coach with the U-17, U-18, U-20 and full Women’s National Teams.
Swanson’s U-23 team boasts six student-athletes from conference institutions, led by two apiece from Florida State and Virginia and followed by one each from Duke and North Carolina. Included on the training camp roster are Florida State goalkeeper Kelsey Wys and defender Kassey Kallman, Duke defender Natasha Anasi, North Carolina forward Kealia Ohai, and Virginia defender Emily Sonnett and midfielder Danielle Colaprico.
On the U-20 side, ACC student-athletes represent nine of the squad’s 24 members, led by three from Notre Dame, followed by two apiece from North Carolina and Virginia and one each from Boston College and NC State. Included on the training camp roster are Boston College forward McKenzie Meehan, North Carolina forwards Summer Green and Amber Munerlyn, NC State forward Jackie Stengel, Notre Dame defenders Katie Naughton and Cari Roccaro, and midfielder Morgan Andrews, and Virginia forward Makenzy Doniak and goalkeeper Morgan Stearns.
Following the camp, U-20 coach Michelle French will name a 20-player roster for the Women’s World Cup qualifying tournament that will run from Jan. 9-19 at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex in George Town, Cayman Islands.
The tournament features eight nations divided into two groups of four teams. The top two finishers in each group will qualify for the semifinals, with the winners of those games along with the winner of the third-place match earning berths to Canada.
The US is in Group A with Costa Rica, Jamaica and Guatemala while Group B features the host Cayman Islands, Honduras, Trinidad & Tobago and Mexico.
The US opens play on Thursday, Jan. 9, against Costa Rica, faces Jamaica on Saturday, Jan. 11, and finishes the group against Guatemala on Monday, Jan. 13. All three of the USA's group games kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET. The semifinal matches will take place on Friday, Jan. 17, and the Championship and Third-Place match are on Jan. 19.
