Duke’s offense and UNC’s defense highlight the week

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Duke sophomore midfielder Deemer Class and North Carolina freshman defenseman Austin Pifani have been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Lacrosse Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, as announced Tuesday by the conference.

Class totaled 14 points on seven goals and seven assists in a 2-0 week for the Blue Devils, which was highlighted by a 21-7 victory over No. 6/6 Syracuse where the Baltimore, Md., native scored six goals and added four assists. Against Furman, Class had a goal and three assists in the 19‐4 win over the Paladins. Five days later, Class had a career‐day, as he scored six first‐half goals en route to his 10‐point outing. His 10 points marked the first time since 2010 a Blue Devil registered double-digit points and were one shy of matching the Duke single‐game record of 11.

Freshman Austin Pifani led two outstanding defensive performances for the Tar Heels as they defeated Harvard and Maryland, 13-10 and 11-8, respectively. Pifani had a career-high five ground balls against Harvard to go along with 2 caused turnovers. Pifani held Crimson attackman Ian Ardrey without a point or goal, and allowed him just one shot. Pifani was even better against No. 1 Maryland as the Tar Heel defense held the Terps to a season-low eight goals, while handing them their first loss of the season. The rookie from Roslyn, Pa., marked Maryland’s second-leading scorer Matt Rambo, and held him without a point on 0-for-7 shooting.

ACC men’s lacrosse action continues today with No. 7/7 Notre Dame playing at Ohio State at 4 p.m.
