Countdown to #ACCTipoff: Maryland Terrapins

Wednesday November 6, 2013

  • •  The Terrapins open the season ranked No. 5 in numerous preseason polls, including the ESPN The Magazine Preseason poll. They will host two of the 2012 NCAA Final Four teams in Connecticut and Notre Dame in College Park.
  • •  After a season riddled with injuries, the Terrapins will look to get back to the Elite Eight and beyond with a full roster. The Terps will be deep with 14 players available at a multitude of positions. They return four of five starters from last year’s team and eight players that have seen over 17 minutes a game on average.
  • •  Two-time All-American and ACC Player of the Year Alyssa Thomas will look to expand her game even more. Last year, she led the ACC in points (18.8), rebounds (10.3) and assists (5.3). She is the first player in the NCAA or WNBA to average over 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists per game for a season.
  • •  Thomas is just 557 points from surpassing Maryland’s all-time leader, Crystal Langhorne. She currently has 854 career boards, which is 375 rebounds behind Langhorne for Maryland’s all-time rebounding record. Her career average of 16.9 points per game is tied with Vicky Bullett (1986-89) for the best average in school history.
  • •  The Terrapins have long been one of the nation’s best rebounding teams. They have led the ACC in rebounding in each of the last three years. Last year, they finished No. 2 in the NCAA (behind only Liberty) with their rebounding margin of +13.9.
  • •  Maryland finished last year No. 3 in the nation and No. 1 in the ACC in field goal percentage (.417). The Terps dominated opponents, averaging 37.2 points per game to opponents’ 24.8.
  • •  Four talented freshmen join the Terrapins this year in Lexie Brown (Guard), A’Lexus Harrison (Forward), Brionna Jones (Center) and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough (Forward). Together they made up the No. 4 recruiting class and fifth top five class under Frese.
  • •  Four Terrapins will return this season after injuries. Brene Moseley, Laurin Mincy, Essence Townsend and Tierney Pfirman will all suit up after recovering from injuries. Moseley, Mincy and Townsend all suffered torn ACLs last year and are all on track. Pfirman dislocated her kneecap in January, then was diagnosed with mono in March. All have been cleared to play. Freshman Brionna Jones tore her ACL in January and has been working with the Terrapin support staff in her rehab. She is expected to be cleared before the start of the season.
  • •  Maryland once again led the ACC in attendance in 2012-13 with 81,821 fans coming to Comcast Center to cheer on the Terps. An ACC-best 5,114 fans came on average per game.
