2013 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team Announced; Florida State's Smith named Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Monday June 24, 2013

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year Gage Smith of Florida State leads the sport’s All-ACC Academic Baseball Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

Smith, a junior marketing major from Tallahassee, Fla., is one of five ACC baseball student-athletes to earn Capital One Academic All-District honors for the most recent season. Smith’s honors for the 2012-13 academic year include the Florida State President’s List (4.0 GPA) and the Dean’s List, in addition to qualifying for the ACC Honor Roll.

On the playing field, Smith led the Seminoles in pitching appearances with 35 while posting a 4-2 record and 2.41 ERA. Smith has been one of Florida State’s most reliable arms out of the bullpen over the past two seasons (74 total appearances in 2012 and 2013) and went through one stretch this season in which he allowed only one run in 22.2 innings pitched (19 appearances).

Smith is one of six Florida State student-athletes named to the 2013 All-ACC Baseball Academic Team. Five apiece from Clemson and North Carolina were named to the squad, which features five players that earned first- or second-team All-ACC honors (Florida State’s Stephen McGee, Maryland’s Jimmy Reed, North Carolina’s Kent Emanuel and Trent Thornton, and NC State’s Tarran Senay), one 2013 All-American (Emanuel) and three Freshman All-Americans (Clemson’s Matthew Crownover and Steven Duggar, and North Carolina’s Thornton).

Twenty-two student-athletes named to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Baseball Team earned spots on the squad on at least one previous occasion. Three-time selections include Duke’s Jeff Kremer, Georgia Tech’s Brandon Thomas, Maryland’s Kyle Convissar and NC State’s Ethan Ogburn.

To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
