Semifinals Set for 2014 @ACCWTennis Championship

North Carolina, Duke, Miami and Virginia Advance

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – The semifinalist field for the 2014 ACC Women’s Tennis Championship in Cary, N.C., is set, as North Carolina, Duke, Miami and Virginia remain.

No. 1 North Carolina will take on No. 5 Duke at 10 a.m. in the first women’s semifinal of the day, while defending ACC champion and No. 2-seeded Miami will square off against No. 3 Virginia at 2 p.m.

The Tar Heels defeated No. 8 Florida State, 4-0, in the first quarterfinal of the morning. North Carolina earned the doubles point with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. In singles play, the Tar Heels earned straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6, with the clinching point coming from Daneika Borthwick.

Duke earned the first upset of the Championship, as it defeated No. 4 Clemson, 4-0. The Blue Devils avenged a regular season loss to the Tigers by quickly earning the doubles point and registering straight-set wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles.

The Hurricanes continued their path to a title defense by handling No. 7 Notre Dame, 4-2. After earning the doubles point, Miami earned wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Melissa Bolivar registered the clinching point for the ‘Canes.

Virginia capped the evening’s action by defeating No. 6 Georgia Tech, 4-1. The Cavaliers earned doubles victories at No. 2 and No. 3, followed by singles wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Julia Elbaba earned the clinching point of the match for Virginia.
