ACC boasts nine postseason teams

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Miami has accepted the Atlantic Coast Conference’s automatic bid to the Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and takes the ACC’s total postseason participants to nine when the Hurricanes begin play in the 64-team event on Thursday, March 20.

Miami (16-14) received an automatic bid to the tournament, being that the Hurricanes were the top rated team from the ACC to not receive an NCAA Tournament bid.

The Hurricanes join fellow ACC members Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State, Notre Dame and Syracuse, all of which earned NCAA Championship berths, in continuing strong seasons.

Miami will host Stetson on Thursday at the BankUnited Center at 7 p.m. Should the Hurricanes defeat the Hatters, it will play the winner of USF and North Carolina A&T with a time, date and location to be determined by the WNIT. All sites, dates and times of subsequent contests will be determined shortly after the previous round is complete.

Miami’s trip to the WNIT marks the fifth-consecutive year that head coach Katie Meier’s team will play in the postseason. The past three years the Hurricanes have gone to the NCAA Tournament. The 2013-14 trip to the WNIT will be the sixth in program history and the third in Meier’s nine years at the helm of the program in Coral Gables. The Hurricanes own a 7-6 record in their brief WNIT history, with an appearance in the championship game in 2010.
