ACC leads all leagues with six selections

GREENSBORO - Six Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes have been named to the 2013-14 preseason  “Wade Watch” list of candidates for the sport’s Player of the Year honor by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association.

ACC Student-Athletes named to the 25-member preseason list include Duke senior guard Chelsea Gray and junior center/forward Elizabeth Williams, Georgia Tech senior guard Tyaunna Marshall, Maryland senior forward Alyssa Thomas, and Notre Dame senior forward Natalie Achonwa and senior guard Kayla McBride.

Each of the ACC’s representatives earned All-America status by the Associated Press following the 2012-13 season. Thomas returns as the reigning ACC Player of the Year, while Gray, Williams and Marshall also earned All-ACC First Team honors.  Achonwa and McBride were All-BIG EAST First Team honorees last season.

The ACC leads all conferences with six selections, while Duke and Notre Dame are two of four schools with two candidates named to the watch list.

Now in its 37th year, The Wade Trophy is named in honor of the late, legendary three-time national champion Delta State University coach, Lily Margaret Wade. Regarded as “The Heisman of Women’s Basketball,” the award is presented annually to the NCAA Division I Player of the Year by the National Association of Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS) and the WBCA.

The preseason list is composed of top NCAA Division I women’s basketball players who best embody Wade’s spirit from 18 different institutions and seven conferences. A committee of coaches, administrators and media from across the United States compiled the list using the following criteria: game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team, and overall playing ability.
