GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Four Atlantic Coast Conference student-athletes are among the 34 on the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy Watch List as announced today by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Representing the ACC are reigning MAC Hermann Trophy winner Patrick Mullins of Maryland, Wake Forest midfielder Jared Watts, ACC Defensive Player of the Year Sebastien Ibeagha of Duke, and North Carolina defender Boyd Okwuonu. All four players were named to the All-ACC First Team in 2012.
ACC student-athletes have won national player of the honors 23 times, including Mullins last season and Duke’s Andrew Wenger in 2011.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in college soccer presented annually to one male and one female athlete. The winners will be announced Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at the trophy presentation banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
Near the end of the collegiate regular season, NCAA Division I coaches that are NSCAA members will vote on their top choices and the lists will be narrowed down to the top 15. College soccer fans will also have the opportunity to participate in the selection process, as they will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalist starting in November at the MAC Hermann Trophy website.
From that pool of 15, three finalists will be chosen for the award. The winners will be announced in January.
