Virginia’s Howard, Maryland’s Stinnett honored
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Virginia junior infielder and pitcher Nick Howard has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Week, while Maryland’s Jake Stinnett earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for the third time this season.
Howard had a strong week with three multiple-hit games and drove in runs in every contest as Virginia went 3-1. On Wednesday he hit a go-ahead two-run single and also picked up the save on the mound in the Cavaliers’ comeback win over Towson. He followed that with a career-high four RBI day in a win over Princeton.
On Saturday at Miami, the Olney, Md., native drove in the Cavaliers’ lone run and then added two hits on Sunday night in an extra-inning victory over the Hurricanes. For the week, he went 8-for-16 with two runs, eight RBIs, four doubles, and one walk while only striking out once.
Stinnett struck out a career-high 14 batters in 8.0 innings to lead Maryland to a 10-0 victory on Friday night against No. 11 NC State, the most strikeouts by a Terrapin pitcher since 2008. The Vista, Calif., native held the Wolfpack to four hits, struck out nine of the first 17 batters faced, and only walked one hitter.
It is the third ACC Pitcher of the Week award for Stinnett in the first six weeks of the season. He is the first ACC pitcher to earn three weekly league awards in a season since 2011, when both Florida State’s Sean Gilmartin and Georgia Tech’s Mark Pope were honored three times.
