Duke’s Juliet Bottorff recognized as sport’s ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year

GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) –Duke’s Juliet Bottorff has been recognized as the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Indoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport’s All-ACC Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

A graduate student from Newark, Del., Bottorff was voted the ACC Female Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the league’s head coaches following a season in which she captured the ACC Championship in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:59.40, and then placed fifth in the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors with a time of 16:26.53.  Bottorff also claimed a silver medal in the 3,000 meters at the ACC Championships, giving her two all-conference showings in the event.

Bottorff, who is pursuing a master of management studies degree, was the recipient of an NCAA postgraduate scholarship last fall and is also an ACC postgraduate scholarship winner. An All-ACC performer in cross country, she was also selected to that sport’s All-ACC Academic team last November.

ACC champion Florida State and Duke lead the All-ACC Academic Women’s Indoor Track and Field Team with nine honorees each. Eight student-athletes from North Carolina were named to the squad. To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during her academic career.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
